People lost their homes and are now on the road to recovery. But one group of people faces additional struggles.
Jessica Gutierrez stood in a classroom full of people during her presentation in Crete. She drove nearly 90 miles from Omaha to host the session on tornado preparedness in Spanish. She worked with Public Health Solutions District Health Department to organize the two-part presentation, the first part about home fire prevention and preparation.
Sergio Robles: Omaha’s “Mexicanos Distinguidos”
By Karlha Velásquez, Hola America News
The Consulate of Mexico in Omaha, in collaboration with the Institute for Mexicans Abroad, awarded the "Mexicanos Distinguidos" recognition to Sergio Robles Maya in honor of his outstanding career and commitment to the Mexican and Latin community in Nebraska.
The ceremony took place at the CHI Health, Creighton University Medical Center on May 3rd. The event was officiated by the Consul of Mexico in Omaha, Jorge Ernesto Espejel Montes, who acknowledged Robles Maya's community work in the city for over 20 years.
John Heaston, long-time publisher of El Perico in Omaha, has passed away.
The National Association of Hispanic Publications released the following statement on their social media. “It’s with much sadness that we share the following news; we were informed that John Heaston passed away the morning of May 31st after a long battle with Leukemia. John was the Publisher at The Reader and El Perico in Omaha, Nebraska. He was a long-time Board Member at the NAHP and his unwavering dedication and advocacy for our association, as well as for the NNPA and the Association of Alternative News Media, was truly admirable. He pioneered the NAHP’s Digital Program and brought tremendous partners such as Google and other benefits to all of our members.”
Fremont group starts new ‘Welcome Buddy’ system to help newcomers and bolster the area’s economy
The Spanish Networking Group based in Fremont sees almost 100 attendees at each monthly meeting.
And that can be intimidating, according to organizer Christine Torres. Torres, the director of membership and development for the Fremont Area Chamber of Commerce, started the group to help build a more successful and diverse economy for the city as a whole, as well as specifically support Hispanic and Latino people in the business community.
The Nebraska Commission on Latino-Affairs attempts to expand despite potential limitations
The Mexican American Commission started in Nebraska 52 years ago. It was established by law to create a sort of middleman between Latinos and the state government. In 2010, it changed its name to the Commission on Latino-Americans.
But despite its tenure in the state, it remains an unknown resource for many Latinos and Spanish-speakers in Nebraska.
Hispanic maternal mortality rates remain unclear in parts of the Midwest
Sophia Piral moved to Columbia, Missouri, from Guatemala in 2019 to study education policy. Her husband and three-month-old son came with her.
“It was difficult in the sense that we were first-time parents and, I mean, there was a different culture, different food, different language,” Piral said. “We didn’t know exactly what to do, or who to ask for help.”
Piral struggled to navigate the U.S. health care system. Shortly after she arrived in the U.S., the COVID-19 pandemic hit, and she lost her mother.
