¡Hola, Nebraska! What an exciting time! Holiday lights glow against gray skies, holiday music permeates the air, and the smell of beloved dishes makes our homes feel cozy. I am incredibly thankful for the gifts of the season, including my new role as editor-in-chief of Hola America Publications: Hola America News, Hola Iowa, JEFAS Latinas in Business Magazine, and Hola Nebraska. I look forward to telling your stories in the new year!

What happens when creativity meets cultural understanding in the digital marketing landscape? For Dayana Hurtado, the answer was Supera Designs. 

It makes sense. Hurtado has an eye for design. She first discovered her creative side while in high school, designing marketing materials for her parents’ Mexican restaurant. As the years went on, she took on social media and website projects in her community. By 2021 she realized she had amassed quite a portfolio, and hence her digital branding firm, Supera Designs was born.

Talk of deportations stirs worry, uncertainty in Nebraska

President-elect Donald Trump’s promise of mass deportations is provoking worry in Nebraska’s Latino community and uncertainty in law enforcement.

It was a familiar refrain from Donald Trump on the campaign trail.

“On Day One I will launch the largest deportation program in American history. We will get the criminals out,” Trump said.

Now that Trump has been elected and is scheduled to take office Jan. 20, many people in Nebraska’s Latino and Hispanic communities are worried, said Maria Arriaga, executive director of the state’s Commission on Latino-Americans.

David City,NE-Sandro Lopes walks through his farm with his 11-year-old daughter, Maria, on a windy day in David City.

Maria points out the different vegetables and flowers. She often begins sentences with “A fun fact about…” as she details the intricacies of the farm. She names off each of her goats.

“My dad thought Chico would really fit the name for this one, which does,” she said, pointing at a black goat and then to another in a different pen. “And we got Kendrick over here.”

Lincoln Chamber of Commerce starts program to empower Hispanic and Latino entrepreneurs.

Lincoln,NE-The Lincoln Chamber of Commerce is launching a new program aiming to empower Hispanic and Latino entrepreneurs in the capital city.

About 160 people from Lincoln’s business community attended an event for the announcement. Raul Sarmiento, a multicultural banking officer at Union Bank and Trust, worked with a team of seven business owners and three Latino leaders to advise the Chamber in how to better serve their communities. He said Spanish-speaking and Latino entrepreneurs don’t always have access to the same resources as English-speakers.
